Gone are the days of compressing highlights to recover detail-fundamentally changing the way we use computers to process photographs." Displays like the new Liquid Retina XDR can easily display the entire dynamic range captured by dSLRs, so the way you develop RAW changes completely, not just for bracketed merge shots, but for single images. We spent most of our time trying to work around the fact that our cameras shoot a few stops more light than can be displayed properly on a standard screen. "The new XDR display is also a game-changer for photographers. The new MacBook Pro also features a Liquid Retina XDR display, which completely changes the way photographers can edit images in Affinity Photo, according to Hewson. Our changes have also improved performance on the previous M1 chip, which is now roughly 10% faster in our benchmark in version 1.10.3."Įspecially as the GPU isn’t the only big win here - the “Vector (Multi CPU)” score in the #M1Max is the highest we have ever measured (for Affinity Designer users), as is the “Combined (Single GPU)” score (for Affinity Publisher, by some margin). "The results of this work yield a benchmark score of around 30,000 for the M1 Max 32core GPU, absolutely obliterating any other single GPU score we have ever measured. This required us to step back and think again about where performance bottlenecks might be, as it's clear the 'old rules' no longer apply. "The new GPU represents an industry reflection point-we now have compute performance surpassing nearly all discrete GPU hardware, but retain the key benefits of unified memory. Just about the only thing that used to count against Affinity Publisher was its lack of support for InDesign files, but the recently added IDML import option address thing making it hard to turn down.Serif today announced updates for its popular suite of Affinity creative apps that bring official support for macOS Monterey and optimizations for the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips powering Apple's latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.Īccording to Ashley Hewson, managing director of Affinity developer Serif, buyers of the latest MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips will enjoy "stunning speed improvements" when using all three apps: Verdict:Ī hugely impressive piece of software with an almost unbelievably low price tag. You'll need to register online though, as even the trial needs a serial code, which you can do here. Ordinarily, there is a trial available that last just 10 days, but at time of writing this has been extended to 90 days. Editing is possible thanks to the availability of non-destructive adjustment layers. As for images, you can import directly from Affinity Photo, or add images in numerous popular formats. When it comes to dealing with text, there is OpenText support and handy options such as text on a curve. Publisher does, however, include a number of sample documents that help to give an idea of what it is capable of. There's support for smart master pages and although there are no templates bundled with the software to help you get started, it is possible to save your own files as templates for speed up the creation of subsequent documents. It will fit perfectly into professional print workflows, and preflight alerts will draw potential problems to your attention before it is too late. The beauty of Affinity Publisher is its flexibility. It would be easy to overlook Publisher because of its association with Serif, but this really is a professional-level tool. There is a massive undo history which gives you great flexibility for rolling back unwanted changes. Affinity Publisher has a great deal to offer and, like the rest of its stablemates, it delivers powerful tools with style. With the bad news out of the way, let's focus on the good. This means that it is possible to work with files in Publisher that you have created in InDesign, but it's not as seamless or as simple a process as many people would like. While Affinity Publisher supports IDML, there is - unfortunately – no INDD support. The three apps work together beautifully thanks to the StudioLink feature, so you can edit images in Affinity Photo, create illustrations in Affinity Designer, and pull everything together in a gorgeous creation in Affinity Publisher.įor anyone who has worked with InDesign, there's good and bad news, and it's worth getting to grips with this sooner rather than later. Part of the so-called "Affinity trinity", Affinity Publisher is Serif's answer to Adobe InDesign.
